What the Numeris Ledger estimated tax tracker includes

  • Federal, state and SE tax, live

Your federal income tax, state income tax and self-employment tax estimates recalculate every time income or expenses change, so the number is current whenever you check it.

  • Built from your real transactions

Connect your bank through Plaid or upload statements and invoices. Transactions import and are categorized automatically, so there is no spreadsheet to keep up to date.

  • Income tracked by period

See what you earned in each estimated tax period, so uneven months and late-paying clients don't catch you out when a payment is due.

  • Safe-to-Spend

Your balance minus the tax reserve: the cash that is actually yours, so the money for your next quarterly payment stays put.

  • Answers from your own numbers

On Plus, the AI Tax Assistant answers questions about deductions and your estimate using your actual books.

  • Our CPA checks the books

On Plus, our CPA reviews your income categories, expense classification and tax-sensitive items every month, so a miscategorized expense doesn't skew your estimate.

Which months does each estimated payment cover?

Estimated tax periods are not equal calendar quarters. This is the standard schedule for individual filers.

PaymentIncome it coversDue date
1st paymentJanuary 1 – March 31April 15
2nd paymentApril 1 – May 31June 15
3rd paymentJune 1 – August 31September 15
4th paymentSeptember 1 – December 31January 15 of the following year

When a due date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, a payment made by the next business day is on time. Most states that tax income also expect estimated payments, on their own schedule.

Estimated tax rules to know

  • If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax for the year, you generally pay estimated tax in four installments, due around April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15. IRS: Estimated taxes
  • You generally avoid the underpayment penalty if your withholding and on-time estimated payments cover at least 90% of this year's tax, or 100% of last year's tax (110% if last year's adjusted gross income was over $150,000, or over $75,000 if married filing separately). IRS: Underpayment of estimated tax
  • Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare) and applies once your net earnings from self-employment reach $400 for the year. IRS: Self-employment tax

Frequently asked questions

What is an estimated tax tracker?

An estimated tax tracker is software that keeps a running estimate of the tax you owe on self-employment income, so you know what to pay each quarter. Numeris Ledger builds that estimate from your real bank transactions and recalculates federal, state and self-employment tax whenever income or expenses change, instead of relying on a spreadsheet you update by hand.

How does Numeris Ledger estimate my quarterly taxes?

It applies current federal, state and self-employment tax rules to your year-to-date net income. Transactions import from your bank through Plaid and are categorized automatically, so the estimate updates as you earn and spend. On Plus, our CPA reviews your books every month, so a miscategorized expense doesn't quietly skew your number.

Does the tracker include state estimated taxes?

Yes. Numeris Ledger estimates state income tax alongside federal income tax and self-employment tax, so the amount you set aside covers all three. State due dates and rules vary, so check your state tax agency's schedule, or ask our CPA if you're unsure what your state requires.

When are quarterly estimated taxes due?

Generally April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15 of the following year. Each payment covers a different stretch of income: January to March, April to May, June to August, and September to December. When a date falls on a weekend or federal holiday, the deadline moves to the next business day.

Can tracking my estimated taxes help me avoid the underpayment penalty?

Yes, if you use it to pay enough on time. The penalty generally doesn't apply when your withholding and on-time payments reach a safe harbor: 90% of this year's tax, or 100% of last year's (110% if last year's AGI was over $150,000, or $75,000 if married filing separately). Numeris Ledger keeps this year's estimate current so you can compare what you've paid against it. Confirm your safe harbor with the IRS or our CPA.

Is a spreadsheet good enough for tracking estimated taxes?

It can be, if you update it every time you are paid or spend money on the business. Most people don't, so the number is out of date just when a payment is due. Numeris Ledger imports transactions automatically and recalculates your estimate as they arrive, so the figure is current whenever you check it.

How much does the Numeris Ledger estimated tax tracker cost?

Estimated tax calculations are included in every plan. Basic is $39/month and Plus is $79/month, both after a 7-day free trial. Plus adds unlimited bank accounts, a monthly review of your books by our CPA, Schedule C generation and the AI Tax Assistant.
