Startup bookkeeping
Startup bookkeeping for early-stage founders
Numeris Ledger is startup bookkeeping software for early-stage founders: it imports your bank transactions, categorizes them, and shows your profit, estimated taxes and Safe-to-Spend cash in real time. Plans start at $39/month after a 7-day free trial, and the Plus plan adds a monthly review of your books by our CPA. You get clean books from your first expense, without hiring a bookkeeper before you have revenue.
What startup bookkeeping with Numeris Ledger includes
Bank sync from day one
Connect your business bank account through Plaid. Transactions import automatically and are categorized, so the books stay current without month-end data entry.
Pre-launch costs captured
Snap or upload receipts and invoices. Document OCR reads them (500 pages/month on Basic), so spending before your first sale is documented when you need it.
Real-time tax estimates
Federal, state and self-employment tax estimates recalculate as income and expenses change, so a profitable quarter never turns into a surprise bill.
Safe-to-Spend runway
See the cash that is actually yours after the tax reserve, not just the bank balance. Useful when every hire or tool purchase is a runway decision.
A Profit & Loss you can share
Every plan includes a Profit & Loss statement built from categorized transactions, ready for a lender, an accelerator application or your own monthly review.
Our CPA checks the books
On Plus, our CPA reviews your income categories, expense classification and tax-sensitive items every month and sends a short notes summary.

Tax rules founders should know
- Start-up costs you pay before the business opens can be partly deducted in the year you start, with the rest deducted over time, but only if you can document them. Keep every pre-launch receipt. IRS: Recordkeeping
- If you expect to owe $1,000 or more in federal tax for the year, you generally pay estimated tax in four installments, due around April 15, June 15, September 15 and January 15. IRS: Estimated taxes
- Self-employment tax is 15.3% (12.4% Social Security plus 2.9% Medicare) and applies once your net earnings from self-employment reach $400 for the year. IRS: Self-employment tax
- Keep the records that support your income and deductions for at least 3 years from the date you filed the return, or 2 years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. IRS: Recordkeeping
Frequently asked questions
What is startup bookkeeping?
Startup bookkeeping is recording every dollar a new business earns and spends, from pre-launch costs to first revenue, so you know your burn, your profit and what you owe in tax. In practice it means syncing bank accounts, keeping receipts, categorizing transactions and reviewing a Profit & Loss statement each month. Numeris Ledger automates those steps and adds real-time tax estimates.
When should a startup start bookkeeping?
Before the first sale. Costs you pay before launch can be deductible, but only if you can document them. Open a separate business bank account, connect it on day one and keep every receipt. Starting early avoids an expensive catch-up at tax time and gives you a clean Profit & Loss from the first month.
How much does startup bookkeeping cost?
Numeris Ledger costs $39/month on Basic or $79/month on Plus, after a 7-day free trial. Plus adds unlimited bank accounts, a monthly CPA review, Schedule C generation and the AI Tax Assistant. If your books are already behind, the One-Time Bookkeeping Cleanup add-on is $650 for up to 12 months of transactions.
Do I need a bookkeeper or bookkeeping software for my startup?
Most early-stage founders can start with software. A bookkeeper typically sends reports monthly or quarterly at a higher cost, while Numeris Ledger keeps your books current every day and, on Plus, adds a monthly review by our CPA. Revisit the choice as your transaction volume or investor reporting grows.
What if my startup needs more than bookkeeping, such as payroll?
Book a CPA consultation. Numeris Ledger is a bookkeeping service: it keeps your books, tax estimates and Safe-to-Spend current, and it does not run payroll. For payroll, entity questions or any other service beyond bookkeeping, book a consultation with our CPA. Your first consultation is complimentary; after that, consultations are $100/hour.
Can I use the same bank account for my startup and personal spending?
You can, but you shouldn't. Mixing accounts makes every transaction a judgment call at tax time and weakens the records that back up your deductions. Open a dedicated business account, connect only that account to Numeris Ledger, and move money to yourself as a clearly labeled owner draw.
Why can't I just use AI to do my accounting?
Because AI on its own can be confidently wrong, and you are still responsible for what goes on your tax return. A general AI chatbot doesn't see your bank transactions, can miss tax rules that changed this year, and can't check its own work. Numeris Ledger uses AI to import and categorize your real transactions and estimate your taxes, and on Plus our CPA reviews your books every month, so mistakes are caught before they reach your return.
