Self-employed bookkeeping

Self-employed bookkeeping that tells you what you owe

Numeris Ledger is bookkeeping for self-employed people, freelancers and 1099 contractors: it imports your income and expenses, categorizes them, and shows what you owe in federal, state and self-employment tax in real time, plus how much is safe to spend. Plans start at $39/month after a 7-day free trial. Self-employment bookkeeping stops being a once-a-year shoebox job and becomes a number you can check any day.

How much self-employment tax will I owe?

Self-employment tax is figured on 92.35% of your net profit. This worked example shows the calculation Numeris Ledger runs for you continuously.

StepCalculationAmount
Net profit (Schedule C)Income minus business expenses$60,000.00
Net earnings from self-employment$60,000 × 92.35%$55,410.00
Social Security portion$55,410 × 12.4%$6,870.84
Medicare portion$55,410 × 2.9%$1,606.89
Self-employment taxSocial Security + Medicare$8,477.73
Deduction for half of SE tax$8,477.73 ÷ 2$4,238.87

Self-employment tax comes on top of federal and state income tax, which is figured after the half-SE-tax deduction. The example assumes net earnings below the Social Security wage base. Numeris Ledger applies current rates to your year-to-date numbers automatically.

Frequently asked questions

What is self-employed bookkeeping?

Self-employed bookkeeping is keeping a running record of the income you earn and the business expenses you pay, so you can report profit on Schedule C and know your self-employment tax. It covers client payments, platform payouts, receipts and mileage. Numeris Ledger automates the recording and shows the tax you owe in real time.

Do I need a separate bank account if I'm self-employed?

It isn't required for a sole proprietor, but it is the biggest time-saver in self-employment bookkeeping. With a dedicated account nearly every transaction is business activity, so categorizing is fast and your deduction records are clean. Not every deposit is income, though: money you put in yourself, loan proceeds and transfers between your own accounts aren't taxable, so categorize them as what they are. Connect just that account to Numeris Ledger.

How much should I set aside for taxes when self-employed?

A common rule of thumb is 25% to 30% of net profit, but the right figure depends on your income, deductions and state. Self-employment tax alone is 15.3% of 92.35% of your net profit. Numeris Ledger replaces the guess with a real-time estimate and shows the rest as Safe-to-Spend.

Do I pay self-employment tax if I made less than $400?

No. Self-employment tax applies once your net earnings from self-employment reach $400 for the year. Below that you generally don't owe it, but you may still need to file a return and report the income for income tax. Confirm your situation with the IRS or our CPA.

What records should a self-employed person keep?

Keep records of income (invoices, 1099s, deposit records), expenses (receipts, account statements, cancelled checks), business mileage and any equipment you buy. Keep them at least 3 years after filing. Numeris Ledger stores uploaded receipts and documents alongside the transactions they support.

Can I do my self-employment bookkeeping on my phone?

Yes. Numeris Ledger runs in the browser and has an Android app on Google Play, so you can check estimated taxes, Safe-to-Spend and new transactions from your phone, and upload receipts as you spend.

Is bookkeeping software enough, or do I need a CPA too?

For day-to-day records, software is enough for most self-employed people. Bring in our CPA for questions about deductions, entity choice or a complicated year. The Plus plan includes a monthly CPA review of your books, and you can book a 1:1 consultation with our CPA on any plan: your first one is complimentary, then $100/hour.

Why can't I just use AI to do my accounting?

Because AI on its own can be confidently wrong, and you are still responsible for what goes on your tax return. A general AI chatbot doesn't see your bank transactions, can miss tax rules that changed this year, and can't check its own work. Numeris Ledger uses AI to import and categorize your real transactions and estimate your taxes, and on Plus our CPA reviews your books every month, so mistakes are caught before they reach your return.
